KEY TO THE MAP THE RED STAR IS US. THE CIRCLED NUMBERS ARE INTERESTING THINGS TO DO, ALL WITHIN A 15 MINUTE DRIVE FROM OUR FRONT DOOR.
1. Wat Taparam is one of the prettier temples in the area, and it’s within walking distance of Chiang Mai Luxury Bed and Breakfast. Bring your camera. 2. Pongyang Gardens is a Thai restaurant that also serves German food. Sit outside and enjoy your food, the mountains, and a waterfall which is on the property. 3. Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden. Almost 100 acres of hiking trails, bicycle roads, nature trails and greenhouses. Plan on spending the whole day here. One of the finest and largest botanical gardens in the world! 4. IMAC ATV’s: Rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle and explore the mountains. If you like four wheeling, this is one of the best places in the world for it. 5. Mae Sa Elephant Camp is one of the most popular attractions in Thailand. Almost 30 elephants live on the large grounds, and recently a baby elephant was born there. The twice-daily shows are amazing, especially when the elephants play polo, eat out of your hand, and paint pictures of mountains, trees, grass, and flowers. You have to see it to believe it. Also a restaurant and shops. Plan on at least a half of a day here, and bring lots of film for your camera. |

6. Hmong Lodge: The Hmong are the mountain people of Thailand and Laos. They still live relatively primitively, and were our allies during the Vietnam War. Their villages are living museums. Also places where, sometimes, opium is still sold to, and smoked with, visitors. 7. Mae Sa Craft Village: A gathering of artisans from the region. If you like native culture and crafts, plan on spending at least part of a day here. The prices are very low by western standards, and it is a great place to buy gifts for your friends and family back home. 8. Art Museum, Bungee Jump, & Monkey Center: Kind of a strange grouping, but there were too many attractions, too close together on the map for separate numbers. The Art Museum features higher priced hand woven rugs, fabrics, and other crafts. For visitors with finer tastes and bigger budgets. The Bungee jump is the only one in Chiang Mai. If you want to jump, it’s there for you, around 10 minutes from our home. The Monkey Center is home to around 75 monkeys who ride bikes, juggle, and do other amazing tricks. 8A. Indoor Shooting Range, Go Kart Rental, Four Wheel Drive ATV Rental, Sports Bar/Restaurant Serving Thai and American Food, Horseback Riding, Paintball Combat, etc. These attractions should really have a number of their own, but there’s not enough room on the map. They include a very good restaurant/sports bar serving both Thai and western food, a paintball combat area, a horseback riding stable, another four wheel drive ATV rental store, a go kart Track, and an indoor shooting range with real guns. Some of these places are new, so we haven’t tried everything yet, except for the restaurant. Sometimes, when you have a craving for a good cheeseburger with fries and a coke, they can be hard to find. Not any more. Their burgers are great! In fact, all the food was excellent, the prices are low, and they will even deliver to you here, if you’d like, for no extra charge. |

9. Mae Sa Snake Farm: This is a mesmerizing place. You sit around a circular pit and watch men handle Cobras and other poisonous snakes seemingly without fear. They “milk” them for poisonous venom, “charm” them in various ways, and get up close and personal with the snakes, nose to nose, in ways which appear terrifying. At the end of the show, if you’d like, you can have your picture with two of the handlers holding a large snake draped around your neck and his face right next to yours. Don’t be chicken. Take the picture! |

10. Mae Sa Waterfall Park: Another full day, and one of our favorite places. It’s a large National Park centered around a large stream or small river (your choice) which falls down through seven levels in the park. In other words, there are seven waterfalls here, and you can hike or trek as far in as you like, until you reach the top one. Reaching it is about a two hour trek. The scenery is beautiful, there is one area where small shops sell native foods, clothing, and equipment, and there are lots of places for a picnic or impromptu snack. You’ll see mostly Thai people here, and whole families picnic on the large, flat rocks in the stream. There is a small admission fee, but it’s worth it. |

11. Orchids, Butterflies, and Teas and Horseback Riding: Again, too many attractions here to list separately, so we gave them one number. There is a large orchid farm or ranch, where you can learn about the technology and techniques needed to grow orchids on a large scale. It’s also a nice place to buy and send orchids as gifts at prices you wouldn’t imagine back home. Next door there’s a large butterfly museum/exhibit, and also a shop that sells teas from all over the world. The orchid ranch is my favorite, but you might prefer one of the others. 12. The Town Of Mae Rim: For some reason they decided not to show Mae Rim on this map, even though the map it titled “Mae Rim Map”, but the town is about where number “12” is placed. I wish I could say Mae Rim was exciting, but I can’t say that. It’s a small town with an open market, 7-11 store, post office, hardware store, food store, and lots of other small stores. It’s functional, and offers several nice services, but the tourist attractions really start once you leave Mae Rim and start up the road to our B&B. By the way, if you drive down our road (down on the map) to the end, and turn right on the large road at the bottom of the map ( that is, when you reach Mae Rim), you are heading directly toward downtown Chiang Mai. Stay on that road, keep driving, and you’ll be there in 15-20 minutes.
