We’re working on a merchant account for MasterCard and Visa, so please ask again when you contact us.  Until the account is set up, we’ll be glad to provide wire transfer instructions, or instructions to send funds from most ATM’s.  You can also pay by electronic check, where you allow our bank to draw a specified amount on your checking account.  We apologize for this, and we know these other payment methods are not as convenient as credit cards, but trust me, we’re worth it.  And we’ll have our credit card merchant account set up soon.

If you ride, you’ll understand.  The BMW is like a member of the family, which has shared glorious tours with us all over Thailand and Laos.  So, for your sake and ours, we want to be sure you’re an insured, licensed, and experienced rider, who feels the same way we do about fine machines.   

It also helps if you are familiar with driving on the left side of the road, and driving in countries where the Rules of the Road are, shall we say, “flexible?”   “Free form” might also fit.  That means a truck coming at you around the bend on your side of the road, or someone driving his motorcycle the wrong way in the wrong lane, is just part of everyday driving. 

Once we get past all of that, we’ll be glad to rent you our motorcycle.  It’s a BMW R1100R, which is, we think, their best cruising and touring bike.  It has 1100 cc’s, 5 speeds forward, new tires, brakes, and battery, rides two up, has side and rear hard saddle bags, soft tank bag, compass, and is virtually flawless. It’s a dream to ride! 

It currently rents for $100 USD per day, and the deposit is $1500 USD**, all of which you can charge to your credit card.  Or, there are several good motorcycle rental places in Chiang Mai, and we’ll be glad to help you find one. If you’d like, your motorcycle and guide can be waiting for you when you arrive.

Have you got at least a month?  For bars and nightclubs, downtown Chiang Mai is still the place to be, but that’s mainly at night.  It’s around 30 minutes to drive to the night spots, and you can either drive it yourself or we can arrange for a driver to take you there.  For things to do during the daytime, take a look at the long list of “Things To Do Nearby”, which is part of this web site.  You’ll probably run out of time before you run out of things to do, and that’s just on the 7 mile (15 km) stretch of mountain which leads to our small development.  It’s almost like a microcosm of Thailand and Chiang Mai, all on one beautify mountain road, offering almost any attraction or activity you might enjoy.

Thailand is on the Equator, and most of Chiang Mai is on low ground in a valley.  As a result, the air in the low lying parts of Chiang Mai — which is most of Chiang Mai — can get hot, smoky, and unpleasant.  At least partly for that reason, we believe, more and more activity is moving  out of the city and up into the mountains, where it’s cooler, cleaner, and where the air smells better. 

The area the Queen chose is one of the nicest parts of Chiang Mai.  No-one is permitted to build on Royal Land, but we live nearby, and that allows us to enjoy the same characteristics which, we believe, prompted the Queen to set this land aside — warm days, cool nights, beautiful scenery, and air that smells good.

For example, most nights we sleep with just the windows open.  No air conditioning needed.  But if you need it, or want it, we have it.  It’s oversized, individually controlled with a small remote unit, and it will keep your room cool, no matter how hot it is outside.  But most nights, just opening the windows, and maybe turning on the fan, will be all you’ll need or want.

We think the best guide in the area is David Unkovich, who is also the creator of the GT Rider web site.  David is an Aussie who’s been traveling north Thailand and Laos on his motorcycles for over 20 years. He’s the authority on motorcycles and touring in this area.

He knows every road, and has even put out a set of maps which are the best ones available.  They show every major highway and back road, and they show them accurately, because David has been there himself and mapped them.  He even taught himself mapping so that he could do it.
